Silence Speaks is an international digital storytelling initiative that aims to provide survivors and witnesses of violence and other forms of trauma with a safe, supportive venue in which to tell their stories in video format. A project of the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS), Silence Speaks has over the past eight years conducted a total of 32 intensive workshops in locations throughout the U.S. as well as in South Africa, Australia, Canada, and Uganda. The resulting digital media pieces challenge distorted mainstream media representations of violence by offering a personal look at the ways in which women negotiate and survive histories of trauma. Stories created in our workshops are used as training, community organizing, and policy advocacy tools to support human rights and promote social justice globally. As part of the Take Back the Tech initiative we are pleased to share stories created in Silence Speaks and other workshops sponsored by Silence Speaks in 2007.
