View original report on: Mexico

Lesbian activists who offer psychological support for the LGBTQI community in central México shared contact information on their Facebook support group page. They were not aware of privacy concerns when they posted the information and assume Facebook was the initial point of awareness of their work and of access to their contact information. They began to receive death threats by email and cell phones, including one where an SMS alerted them in the middle of a support-group meeting that they were going to burn down their house with all the people meeting in it. Local police were alerted with the first threat but as threats escalated did not seem to take action til the activists brought in the national commission on discrimination. Activists did not know if anyone was ever apprehended but they do know someone received at least a warning regarding their email and cellphone usage. They stopped receiving the threats.
