bonita's story

Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence Workshop, Denver, CO, USA; March 2004

How did you feel about using digital video as a way to craft and tell your story?

When I first decided to become a part of this project, I was excited because it would be a way for me to get my story out. Although I had been speaking at various conferences, this would be a way to reach a larger audience. During the learning experience, there were times when I felt I could not go any further due to the emotions of seeing my story as opposed to reading or speaking about it. It was an intensive learning experience, but the end result was worth it.

What do you think is the power of telling stories through this method?

For most people, visualization is the best way for them to grasp the subject. It’s one thing to hear a story, but to actually see it provides a powerful impact.

Who have you shared your story with? What responses have you received?

I use my story as an introduction when I do workshops on domestic violence. Once it is viewed, the audience wants to know more. For example, how did I get through my experience and questions regarding abuse. Also, people want copies to show others. The last time I showed the story, the head of the organization wanted to know if I would have a problem if they wanted to use it as a part of their teaching video regarding violence.

In what ways has the process of both creating and sharing your digital story contributed to change in you? (if it has ...)

It has helped me to take my teaching further. It is a powerful tool. Creating my story allowed me to become even stronger, and it provided healing for me.

Do you it's important to connect survivors globally, and how useful is digital storytelling in this?

As survivors, we already have a bond; we went through it and lived to tell the story, and we should keep each other uplifted. It is important for us to connect in this way because it is like we are actually speaking to one another and sharing our experiences.

Is there anything else you'd like to express, about your story, about the process of making it, etc.?

I never saw the significance of the stoop until I created my story. Once I began thinking, I was able to see the strong impact of being able to walk outside of a building in New York and sit on the stoop, which I referred to as "mountain top for city folks" and collect my thoughts. I found the experience of making my story rewarding, although emotionally draining at times. I am glad I did it because it will help others and let others know that, although I lived it, I am still alive and have dedicated my life to helping others in abusive situations. I'm not going to say it was easy, but if you persevere, you will find it to be one of the best experiences you have ever had. I look forward to someday teaching others how to create digital stories so that they can begin to heal. It is also great for creating a family history, using a story instead of pictures, etc.
