BE SAFE
Get to know technology and find out how you can take steps to make your online experience a safer one. Here are some tips and ideas on how you can protect your privacy while browsing and communicating online.
6. Online chat
There are a lot of ways that you can communicate "securely" using Internet Messenger services. The most common IM services are Yahoo, AIM, Google Chat and Skype. Most of them have their own clients (i.e. Yahoo Messenger).
Basic Tips
- Don't use the option to "automatically remember your password". Using this means that anyone using your computer will be able to log on to your messenger services using your username and password.
- Make sure that the archiving feature of your messenger client is disabled. In Yahoo! Messanger, go to File > Preferences > Archive.
- If you do want to archive your conversations, make sure you know where the archive is kept in your hard disk so that you can delete them when necessary or move them to another (more secure) storage device. The location varies depending on what operating system you're using.
On Windows:- C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\your_account_name\Archive
Knowing where the archive is kept is also handy if you IM using Internet cafes and / or other public access points. Make sure that before you leave the computer, delete your YM folder.
- C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\your_account_name Don't use your real name creating your online identity. Don't reveal too much on your online profile. It makes it easier for stalkers to google you :-)
- C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\your_account_name\Archive
